I’ve always lived within my means. I’ve never been in debt in my life. I refuse to because I know the minute I’m in debt, I’m then at somebody else’s behest, and it’s the way Hollywood works. Hollywood is very good about getting everybody out there to live richly. So they’re all in debt. They’ve got mortgages, and they have to keep churning out whatever Hollywood wants them to make. And I can’t do that.

Be so good they can’t ignore you.

I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work the more of it I seem to have.

Every so often, I have to remind myself to not make decisions based on imaginary conversations. It’s just wasted fear time, spent on all the bad things that could happen, instead of the really interesting things that might.

… It’s all about TAKING ACTION. And keeping on with it, mechanically, if need be - until something becomes, even briefly, more interesting to you than your own fear. Until you get caught by the words.

Pitching is sharing enough of the sizzle so you get paid to cook the meal.

Every word that you can get off the page and every frame that you can take out of your movie makes it closer to the feel that you experience as its author. Words in a script are like sandbags in a hot air balloon. Every one that you can toss overboard lets your project rise faster and soar higher. It brings your best ideas closer together, makes the work tigher and more exciting. It turns wine into cognac (well, not quite).
